The Immigration Service Delivery has announced that from the 4th of November 2024, full responsibility for immigration registrations will transfer from the Garda National Immigration Bureau to the Immigration Service Delivery Registration office.
Permission to Remain Renewals
Commencing 4º of November 2024, the Immigration Service Delivery Registration Office will take over the processing of all renewal applications and applications for a change in immigration Stamp permission.
Previously the ISD office dealt with renewals for applicants residing in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Meath, Kildare, and Wicklow only.
This important change means that persons will no longer attend garda stations for renewals of IRP cards and will instead use the ISD online portal, regardless of where they reside in the country in order for the renewal to be processed.
Applications can be submitted up to 12 weeks in advance of the expiry date of a current IRP card.
To assist users of the online portal, the ISD have published a step by step Guide to Engaging with Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) Registration Office.
Applications for First Registrations
There is no change to the first registration process.
Residents of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Meath, Kildare, and Wicklow will continue to register for the first time at the Burgh Quay ISD Registration Office.
Residents of all other counties registering for the first time will continue to attend their local district garda station headquarters for registration.
The immigration team at Sinnott Solicitors Dublin and Cork view the announcement as an extremely positive change which is hoped will speed up the processing times for renewal applications, and also reduce wait times for first registration appointments.
Last week it was made public that the next appointment available in Galway for a first registration or renewal application was April 2025, leaving many non-EEA nationals resident in Galway without a valid IRP card for months.
The transfer of renewals to the ISD registration office will have a significant impact on the efficiency of the renewal system and provided that sufficient staff are assigned to the ISD office to deal with the processing of applications, should greatly improve the efficiency of the process to the benefit of the thousands of non-EEA nationals who use and are dependent on the system.
