The Minister for Justice has announced that from Monday 13º of January 2025, the responsibility for Irish Immigration Registrations will transfer fully from An Garda Síochána to the Immigration Service Delivery of the Department of Justice (ISD).
What does this mean
Up until 2020, registration of all Irish immigration permissions was the responsibility of An Garda Síochána. Since the online registration system was set up in July 2020 responsibility for immigration registrations has gradually transferred to the ISD on a phased basis.
In July 2020 responsibility for all Dublin registrations was transferred to the ISD.
In April 2024 the counties Meath, Kildare and Wicklow were transferred to the ISD Burgh Quay Registration Office with Cork and Limerick added in July 2024, and Galway following suit in October 2024.
Today’s announcement confirms that the ISD will now assume full responsibility for immigration registrations of all Irish residents.
Persons who have not previously registered an immigration permission in the State must book an appointment and attend the Burgh Quay Registration Office for their first registration.
Appointments can be booked on the new Customer Service Portal.
Applications for renewal of all Irish immigration permissions will be processed via the ISD online renewal portal available aqui.
First registration appointments with An Garda Síochána up to 31st of January 2025
Non-EEA nationals residing outside of counties Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow who have booked an appointment with their local Garda station for a first registration appointment up to the 31st of January 2025 can proceed to attend the relevant appointment as scheduled.
Alternatively, they may cancel their appointment and book an appointment at the Dublin Registration Office.
Persons without a confirmed first registration appointment at a Garda station prior to the 31st of January 2025 should now proceed to book an appointment via the new Customer Service Portal.
Renewals of permission to remain
All applications for the renewal of immigration permissions must be submitted using the ISD online renewal portal. Applications can be submitted up to 12 weeks prior to the expiry of a person’s current permission to remain.
