If you have sustained an injury during the course of your duties as a member of An Garda Siochana you may be entitled to compensation.

If for example you were assaulted during the course of your duties or if involved in a road traffic collision during the course of your duties you may be entitled to bring a claim under the Garda Siochana Compensation Acts.  

In the event that you are involved in a road traffic accident during the course of your duties your claim will be brought before the Injuries Board and/or a Court application for compensation.

Under the Garda Síochána Compensation Act the time to bring a claim for your injuries during the course of your duty is three months.  

In the event of an accident arising during the course of your duties an Injuries Board application must be brought or Court proceedings if necessary within two years from the date of the accident.

Michelle’s story: Garda compensation claim case study

Michelle was travelling at speed in a Garda squad car.  She was a passenger in the car and the car had been driven recklessly during a chase by her fellow colleague who was driving at the time.

Unfortunately the car collided with another vehicle causing Michelle and the driver significant injuries.  Michelle sustained a broken collar bone and significant whiplash and stiffness to her neck for a number of months.

Sinnott Solicitors achieved an award of €65,000 for Michelle pursuant to the Garda Compensation Scheme.
