The Immigration Service Delivery of the Department of Justice and Equality have launched a new system inviting students to renew their student immigration permissions to remain in the State online.  A similar system for online renewal of third level immigration permissions was available in 2019.

The online renewal system is open to students who are resident in Dublin only and who have previously registered with the Garda National Immigration Bureau on a Stamp 2 or Stamp 2A immigration permission.  In addition, the renewal system is only open to applicants whose IRP card have expired or are due to expire in 29 days or less.

The application to renew the student കുടിയേറ്റം permission is submitted through an online immigration portal, which is available on the following link:

https://inisonline.jahs.ie/user/login

Applicants will be directed to upload certain documentation to the online portal and follow payment instructions in order to pay the €300 registration fee.

After submitting the application online, applicants will be directed to submit the following documentation to the Immigration Service Delivery by registered post: –

  1. Original current Passport, which must be in date;
  2. Original IRP card;
  3. Copy of the application acknowledgment email.

A full list of supporting documentation which must be uploaded with the application is listed on the website and includes documentation such as proof of private medical insurance, letter from the college/school confirming registration as a student, proof of payment of college fees, amongst other documentation.

The ISD have announced that they aim to process applications within 10 to 15 working days of receiving documentation by registered post.

If the application for renewal is successful, then the person will be notified by email, their permission to remain on student conditions will be renewed and their passport will be stamped and returned by registered post to the address provided on their application.

The IRP card (Irish Residence Permit) will be sent to them via post approximately 5 to 7 working days later.

Full information on the application process and supporting documentation can be found at the following link: –

The online renewal system is available to students who are resident in Dublin only. Students residing outside of Dublin are required to attend their local immigration office to renew their immigration permission once offices reopen. No further detail has been provided by the ISD as to when the Garda National Immigration Bureau and regional immigration offices will reopen to the public.

We submit that it is incumbent on the ISD to announce details in this regard as soon as possible as the current uncertainty is a cause of significant stress and anxiety to many individuals, particularly those whose immigration permissions had already expired prior to the 20th of March 2020 and were thus unable to avail of the automatic extensions of permission to remain granted.
